Campaign
Environment a Turnham priority
Joe Turnham stood on Saugahatchee Creek's wooded bank and pointed to the area across the stream where a company wants to start a rock quarry.
He isn't against rock quarries. But he does believe there are places better suited for them than along the creek.
So Turnham has lent any political influence he might have to the East Alabama Alliance for Quality living, which is trying to block the quarry. About 30 residents gathered recently at a home near the creek to throw him a party to support his campaign for Congress.
"It's incomprehensible that we would swap something like the serenity that we have here for the sound of backing alarms and dynamite going off," he said.
Joe Turnham is standing tall for Alabama's environment and natural resources
No Congressional District in America is as blessed with natural God-given resources as the new Alabama 3rd District. Four major rivers, the Coosa, Tallapoosa, Alabama, and Chattahoochee meander through the 3rd District. Major lakes like Weiss Lake, Lake Neely Henry, Logan Lake Martin, Lake Wedowee, West Point Lake, Lake Martin, Lake Harding, Lay Lake and Lake Mitchell in some way affect the land area of the 3rd District. Thousands of citizens and lake homeowners enjoy the benefits of these water bodies. Yet they are threatened! Threatened by Georgia development and diminishing water quality from over development and pollution. The people of the 3rd District need a warrior to protect their interests. Joe Turnham, since 1998, has been a leader in Alabama for water quality and espousing Alabama's rights in water war discussions with Georgia and Florida.
Did you know that five of the district's 13 counties contain land that is part of a National Forest? The Talladega and Tuskegee National Forests are part of the 3rd Congressional Districts most precious jewels. They contain some of the greatest recreation, wildlife and natural wonder than almost and other place in the Southeastern United States. In fact outdoor recreation including hunting and fishing are part of the greatest economic engines of the entire district, yet a vast majority of voters say that elected officials don't do enough to protect and enhance them. That will change when you elect Joe Turnham to Congress. Joe has earned the credentials as one of the state's top environmental advocates.
Issues from Montgomery with hog factories to Lee County with rock quarries to Cleburne County with illegal tire dumps to Calhoun County with PCB and Lead Contamination and Chemical Weapons Incineration demand a new Congressman with an environmental background! Joe Turnham is informed, balanced yet passionate about protecting the health and property of 3rd District residents affected by these issues. "Unbought and Unbossed" by the mule interests of Alabama, Joe is free to deliberate, negotiate and fight for the rights of everyday citizens on the environmental concerns that affect their private property rights, health and ability to hunt, fish and enjoy the great Alabama outdoors.
